Building Strong Communities in London
The role of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in communities has never been more important. It plays a key role in levelling up the country and strengthening local communities to ensure anyone no matter their background can build up a foundation in English to help them reach their potential and reduce any isolation they may have. At a time when more people than ever are feeling isolated due to Covid-19 restrictions, ESOL is a way for individuals to build up skills to participate in their local community.
As part of a recovery programme to build up Londoner's resilience against future epidemics, the Mayor of London has introduced a Recovery Programme. One such aim of this programme is that by 2025, all Londoners will have access to a community hub ensuring they can volunteer, get support and build strong community networks.
The aim of this programme is to ensure that Londoner's are able to lead the recovery in their own communities by focusing on hyperlocal, community-led activities and co-production with a priority on working with those who were most affected by the pandemic.
According to Greater London Authority, around 34% of Londoners volunteered formally in 2018–19, and around 53% of Londoners took part in informal volunteering. The Building Strong Communities in London aim is that the most disadvantaged can get the support and services they need. ESOL is one qualification that can build feelings of belonging and help combat loneliness and social isolation.
How can Ascentis help aid this fundamentally important step to recovery?
Ascentis' ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are designed specifically for people living in Britain and focus on preparing learners for everyday life, further education and the world of work.
The primary aim is to assist the learner in becoming independent of other people such as interpreters or translators when interacting with English speakers in a work environment and elsewhere.
By improving their communication and fluency in English, learners will significantly improve their employability skills and their ability to fully participate in every part of life in Britain beyond their local community.
